Bonjour and a very happy 2010 to my darling Shoe Princesses.

I’m so thrilled to welcome the divine Canadian book reviewers, Jonita of Book Chic and Tina of Bookshipper to the Shoe Princess fold.  And of course SP Emma Bowd is delighted and humbled by their glowing reviews of The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy…certainly makes those hundreds of hours at the coal face worth it!

It seems the international languages of shoes, motherhood, friendship and love know no boundaries…

The Shoe Princess formally decrees that all loyal subjects in her shoedom shall wear sparkly red shoes this New Year’s Eve.

In exchange for donating money or time to any charity working hard for mums, dads, babies and their families.

A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my darling Shoe Princesses.

Until next year, au revoir.

xxxx

SP Emma Bowd and moi have proudly supported the following charities in 2009:

Oceans of thanks to the darling little junior Shoe Princes and Princesses of Bayside Melbourne, who polished and buffed their end-of-school-year black leather shoes and donated them to SP Emma Bowd’s Shoe Princess School Shoe Drive for the Ardoch Youth Foundation

A staggering 80+ pairs of shoes were collected.

Thank you! xx

My Darling Shoe Princesses

Every now and then SP Emma Bowd needs to remind me (with a subtle jab of her stiletto!) that her gorgeous little novel The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy is not just about shoes!

Indeed, shoes provide quite a lovely window-dressing for her tale of transition from career-girl to first-time-mum… and all the fun and games that follow.

Heartfelt thanks to the utterly divine Brighton MOPS for having SP Emma Bowd talk about her novel.  She was truly overwhelmed by the warm welcome and absolutely enjoyed the questions and discussions that evolved.

Hats off to MOPS…a glittering gem of a lifeline for mums and their children and families.  Bravo! xx

I can fly! Well…on learner wings and loving it!  Who’d have thought it would feel so good with my heels off the ground?! xx

shoe princess cover With the Spring Racing Carnival well underway in Australia, and Derby Day and Melbourne Cup soon upon us, I feel it my Shoe Princessly duty to pass on some tried and tested Fashions in the Field advice for Shoes:

Shoe Bling1. Bling it On – Another wonderful discovery from the Australian Shoe Fair – the divine and oh so clever Shoe Bling. Delectable little hand-crafted accessories that clip onto your shoes.  The perfect way to reinvent a favourite pair of shoes or coordinate with your hat and race day outfit.  My personal favourite is the leather black and white flower (pictured).

2.  Dress to Impress – If, unlike myself, you won’t be ensconced in the VIP marquees all day and need to traverse grass, I strongly suggest a wedge heel ahead of a stiletto to avoid that sinking feelingA closed-toe platform-wedge is ideal to halt mud-encrusted grass creeping into toes…eeuch.

fabz folding leather shoes3.  Style and Stamina - Do NOT wear new shoes to the races.  Ever.  A race day is a marathon not to be run in towering spikes fresh out of their box – especially if you’re used to flats.

Equally, I beg my SPs NOT to wear flip-flops at the end of a long day’s frolicking at the races.  Opt for something a little more glam but comfortable like the adorable fabz (pictured) - which not only look absolutely fabulous, but are heavenly on tired feet (with lovely padded leather soles) AND fold-up neatly into a handbag-friendly pack!

Have fun my darlings! xx

Bonjour My Darlings

Some words of wisdom from the utterly divine SP Catherine Logue, who I recently met at a gorgeous girlie soiree (along with her stunning satin lime green Louboutins):

“If you can’t run in heels you don’t deserve them!”

A wise woman indeed!  In honour of my kindred spirit I’ve found a fun little video, on the Neiman Marcus website, of an interview with Monsieur Louboutin in his Paris workshop.

Enjoy! xx

ShoestoppersBonjour My Darlings

I’m in holiday mode at the moment and enjoying the fruit of one very clever Shoe Princess’s labours…feast your eyes on the utterly divine and incredibly well-crafted Shoe Stoppers!  The brainchild of SP Jane Brown who, literally, came up with the idea for the lovely little pieces of gorgeousness one evening over a glass of red.  (I’m privy to all the inside goss thanks to SP Emma Bowd’s jaunts at the Australian Shoe Fair!)

I can also vouch that they work a treat…as SP Emma Bowd craftily bartered a copy of her novel The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy for the black and white polka dot stiletto Shoe Stopper!  (They are quite weighty and come in a cute satin-lined gift box)

In my ongoing quest to drag SP Emma Bowd out of dreary bookstores and into shoe stores, I’m immensely excited to note the success of her recent Charity Book Event at Cecci Shoes in Hampton.  I’m reliably informed that not only did much shoe- and book-buying take place, but a glorious $1,573 was raised for the magnificent Ardoch Youth Foundation.  A full report appears in its own section on this blog.

Australian Shoe FairGreetings, my darling Shoe Princesses from the hallowed halls of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and the Australian Shoe Fair (ASF).

…where and how does one begin…

Firstly, what an honour and truly fascinating experience it has been for a shoe-consumer (extraordinaire!) like myself, to take a behind-the-scenes peek at the life-cycle of a shoe.

I’ve been overwhelmed by the many different players in this significant production which I’ve had the enormous fortune to meet, including:  importers, exporters, inventors, designers, manufacturers, captains of industry, family businesses, one-person enterprises, retailers (of all shapes and sizes), shoe-making teachers, stylists, web-based companies, bloggers, publishers, journalists, event organisers, publicists, image consultants, film-makers and philosophers (truly!).

If the national grid could harness the energy at the ASF, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions would be halved in one fell swoop.

In short…completely and utterly INSPIRING.

Oceans of thanks to the divine Hailey and Anna from Angus & Robertson for selling The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy and A Passion for Shoes to my adoring fans, too!

Over the coming weeks and months I will have great pleasure in introducing you to some of the shoe-related companies and products that have caught my eye at the ASF.  Until then, au revoir, my darlings, and remember,

My Darling Shoe Princesses

It is with immense excitement and great pleasure that I can formally announce some very special news from the heart of my Shoedom:

For three whole days, from Sunday 30th August, 2009, SP Emma Bowd and moi will be special guests of the Australian Shoe Fair in Melbourne!  This is a trade-only fair my humble subjects, so expect lots of exclusive snippets of news and gorgeousness coming your way via this blog from inside the hallowed halls!  (And who knows…SP Emma Bowd may even learn how to use her Twitter account, and make some Tweets too…!)

Surrounded by so many people with a passion for shoes and their magnificent wares, you may very well not get us out of there! xx

Novo Shoe Princess Shoe

My heartfelt congratulations to the 20 divine Shoe Princesses from all around Australia who won a copy of SP Emma Bowd’s novel in the Novo shoes competition!  Of course, it was little surprise to learn that the overwhelming vote for No.1 Celebrity Shoe Princess went to the lovely Sarah Jessica Parker.

I can just imagine SJP in the heavenly scarlet satin bow stiletto by Novo, pictured at left….my favourite shoe in bookstore window displays to date.  My spies reliably inform me that the manager of Angus & Robertson Southland, the gorgeous Jasmina, loved this shoe in her display so much she had to go and buy it!

Novo Shoes

So, without much ado, it is with great pleasure that I, with the powers vested in me by, well, me, most solemnly declare the Novo scarlet satin bow stiletto the Honorary Shoe Princess Shoe!  xx

P!NK Shoe Princess Shoe - Christian Louboutin peep toe stilettoMy Darling Shoe Princesses

After dancing our way through the utterly amazing P!NK Funhouse Tour concert in Melbourne last night, SP Emma Bowd felt it only fitting that she dedicate a new Shoe Princess category in honour of P!NK

P!NK Shoe Princess:  This Shoe Princess is equally at ease in (gasp!) no shoes, biker-boots or vertiginous platform stilettos.  But to truly qualify as a P!NK Shoe Princess you must be able to effortlessly hop, skip, jump AND do handstands in your heels!  Oh, and did I mention trapeze work as well…You go girl!

(31 May 2009)

Bow Shoes, by Venetia SarllNews snippet of the week comes from Andrew Leonard…“in the depths of a deep recession, there are at least two industries that, like cockroaches, seem able to survive any environment: footwear and mobile phones.”

And researcher, David Thomas, has even put a figure to it!  Estimating that the Average Mrs Briton will, during the course of her life (81 years), spend £31,000 on shoes, belts and accessories.  With 86% buying one pair of shoes per month.

Recessions may come and go, but a love of fine footwear clearly conquers all!

My Darling Shoe Princesses

As you well know, there’s nothing quite like the adrenalin rush of a Shoe Sale to set the pulse racing.  Imagine how excited I was to accompany SP Emma Bowd to a book-signing at Myer department storein the midst of their end-of-financial-year shoe sale!  Heaven.  Our thanks to the divine Bev and her gorgeous team at Myer Southland (especially the book department) for allowing us to have so much fun!

It’s quite apt that I remind my dear subjects of my Top 5 Tips for Shoe-sale shopping :

1. Yes, you really do need satin lime-green stilettos and purple ankle boots a size too small for you (that’s what panadol was invented for).

2. Wear thin tights and comfy mules or loafers – not glam, but easier when trying on shoes in a hurry.

3.  Always be polite and courteous and never snatch shoes from another Shoe Princess.  Ever.

4. Chant the mantra: “Why buy one pair of sale shoes when I can technically afford to buy five?”

5. Have fun and hopefully you will find that couture stiletto which you would never have been able to afford otherwise.

My thanks to the divine Chuck and his stunning team at Dymocks for their wonderful hospitality at a book-signing today!  As always, SP Emma Bowd and I had much fun chatting with an array of lovely Shoe Princesses and hearing their wonderful shoe stories!

We even had a SP demonstrate walking in her fascinating MBT shoes (that’s “Masai Barefoot Technology” for the uninitiated).  Now…they were funky and red, but, let’s face it, any shoe with NO heel that markets itself as an anti-shoe is hardly going to rock my world!  Best left to the dear little Masai men and I’ll stick to my Manolos. xx

I’m also quite chuffed to note their appreciation of SP Emma Bowd’s research into all things shoe-related.  I hasten to add that it was moi who insisted she attend a shoemaking weekend at the divine Prescott and Mackay  school of fashion and accessory design, London. (Sadly, no hunky Italian tutor as in Shoe Princess though!) - the fruits of her toils and blistered fingertips displayed in the photo above.  And, yes, we did do a shoe-trip to Milan too (the Holy Grail of all Shoe Princesses)….the cobblestones are truly treacherous! xx

Manolo Blahnik stilettos (all illustrations by Venetia Sarll*)

My darling Shoe Princesses, have I got an adorable story for you!

Sent in today by the divine SP Lorraine – formerly a steadfast Cinderella SP but now, thanks to a purple suede pair of strappy Manolo Blahnik stilettos purchased at her local thrift shop (!) a very happy Recessionista SP.

Over to you Lorraine:

…”Was bursting to tell someone and thought you would be the only person on the planet to truly understand!  My very first pair of Manolos came complete with original box, tissue paper (sooo important) and dust bag.   This is the highest pleasure… ‘a gift from a shoe goddess’ as opposed to the guilt of an expensive credit card purchase!  Am eternally optimistic after such a lucky find that my life will now take a turn and live up to my new shoes!”

SP Emma Bowd can’t help but wonder how the (almost-new) Manolos ended up in the thrift shop…could be the beginning of another book…xx

I must confess that being the star of The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy AND my own magnificent blog has been cause for some envy from my humble author SP Emma Bowd

As editor-in-chief of my blog I’m afraid that I have, on several occasions,  had to reject her feeble offerings.  Having said that, with my blessing, she’s somehow convinced the UK Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook to feature her as a guest author on their blog with ‘Seven secrets of writing a page-turner’ (yawn…), ‘Are you a natural born author?’ (double yawn…) and ‘How to deal with rejection letters’ (…isn’t every writers’ middle name ‘Good-But-Not-Good-Enough’?! Honestly, stop moaning and buy a nice pair of shoes and move on).

Nevertheless, I strongly urge subjects of my Shoedom to take a peek at the articles and stroke her fragile ego….though I do note that she didn’t give away her eighth secret to success….a fabulously beautiful and intelligent Shoe Princess as a main character! xx

My heartfelt thanks to Shoe Prince, Dennis Verrios, for posting these photos hot from the streets of London (WH Smith; Waterstones)…a mere 4 days into publication!

I urge all the loyal UK subjects of my Shoedom to take The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy on summer holiday…and let’s nudge that ranking number along a little….Something more akin to my UK shoe size (5) would be much more befitting a Shoe Princess! xx

It is with immense pleasure that I offer you this snippet of loveliness from SP Laura Coleman, penned after her reading of The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy…and unwittingly solving a conundrum for SP Emma Bowd:

“I just read your book and really loved it….my own SP description was sadly lacking!

The Late Bloomer SP

This shoe princess discovered her inner SP later than some of her counterparts and so her shoe passion is a source of delicious delight (she has ‘lost’ years to catch up on).  She has never bought a designer pair of shoes (and finds the prospect both scary and intriguing).  As a full time mum, some of her most satisfying moments come from having her shoes noticed!  She rarely wears heels as life has to be practical but loves a bit of height…she would love to have a lifestyle that warranted higher heels or, gasp, stilettos and often picks up hugely impractical shoes to stroke and admire…before going on to purchase a practical ballet flat.

This SP is very grateful to Princess Sapphire of Shoelandia for a hugely entertaining read which was such a welcome diversion from the grind and toil of life with a 2yr old and a 4 yr old!  An education…!

It was also good to meet you at the Magnolia Square market in Brighton recently. It has been inspiring to read your book and find that it took some time for you to craft your wonderful book. Thanks again for a great read, I found that my interest and desire to keep turning the page never waned – a rare treat!”

A genuine Shoe Princess convert…welcome to the fold my darling! xx

SP Emma Bowd's 'Be A Bag' by Anya HindmarchMy Darling Shoe Princesses

To celebrate my joyous launch in the UK today (The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy, Bloomsbury), I’ve convinced my humble author SP Emma Bowd to showcase her trusty work bag – much commented on by Aussie SPs at book signings to date!

It is, of course, a Be A Bag by the lovely British designer Anya Hindmarch – featuring a favoured pair of Dorothy shoes from SP Emma Bowd’s personal collection.

A true Shoe Princess clearly wears her heart on her handbag! xx

“Stilettos – a feat of engineering!”

Surely the most dedicated subject in my shoedom….a SP Extraordinaire!

My heartfelt thanks to the perfectly pedicured Shoe Princesses of Brisbane who treated SP Emma Bowd and I to a fabulous evening of wine, nibbles and much shoe- and book-talk at Mary Ryan’s Bookstore in Paddington.  The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy (Aust/NZ; UK) posters adorned every wall; and the delightful owner, Steph, proudly wore a necklace made of delectable little silver shoes! Completely inspiring and utterly enjoyable!

Here’s what the lovely Magnolia Square had to say about The Shoe Princess’s Guide to the Galaxy (Aust/NZ; UK): “…..a very funny tale of the transition from shoe addicted working-girl to swollen footed new mum!  A sassy and original debut about one woman’s attempts to put her best foot forward. There’s a little bit of Shoe Princess in all of us, my darlings – Shoe Are You?

THE SP

This princess (usually an international supermodel society beauty) totally understands the sexual cocktail of upmarket shoes and good grooming, and uses it to ensnare her impossibly handsome and wealthy husband/lover/partner.  She could not tell you how many pairs of shoes she owns – but it would be in the hundreds.  Her maid may have a better idea, as she is the only one allowed to touch them. She only ever ambulates cab-to-door and enjoys the jet-set lifestyle.  The only ‘casual shoes’ you will ever spy her in are her high-heeled, towelling Jimmy Choo pedicure-wedge flip-flops. She often has personal relationships with some of the biggest shoe designers on the planet, and thinks nothing of having shoes express couriered to her home direct from Italy for special occasions.  She considers pedicures (French of course) more important than food.

Cosmo SP

The thoroughly dedicated-to-the-cause, childless, working girl who utterly adores shoes.  She is known to ring up her best friend on her mobile in the midst of a shoe sale pandemonium, seeking validation to blow her budget on a ‘must-have’ pair of silver Sonia Rykiel 3 inch spikes.  She always owns a pair of red ‘Dorothy’ shoes and ‘lucky’ first date and job interview shoes.  She takes shoe shopping very seriously, and has been known to shop for six hours straight in a quest to find the right pair.

Fashionista SP

Is happy to wear her vertiginous cheetah-print platform wedges with her strapless sundress on a cold and drizzly summer’s afternoon in London. All because Vogue ran a series of pictures of The Cat wearing them in St Tropez.  Her mantra is ‘no pain, no gain’.  She has her name on at least three shoe waiting lists at any one time.  She doesn’t ‘do’ white trainers – unless at the gym – as it would be like wearing polyester trousers.

There’s more to come!  Or better still, send in your own…
